Composition, Classification And Quality Of Lignite In Nnewi And Environs, Niger Delta Basin, Nigeria

Abstract

X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and x-ray fluorescence stereoscopy (XRF) have been carried out on eleven (11) lignite samples from the Ogwashi-Asaba Formation. Results of X-ray diffraction analysis suggest the lignite samples are composed of some impurities which include the clay mineral kaolinite and non-clay minerals such as quartz, pyrite, cristabolite and graphite. X-ray fluorescence analysis suggests that the coal is composed of major oxides such as SiO2 (71.67 – 72.95%), Al2O3 (23.16 – 25.50), Fe2O3 (0.21- 1.91) and TiO3 (0.89 – 1.41), minor oxides of MgO, MnO, CaO, Na2O3, K2O3, Cr2O3, CuO, ZnO, PbO and NiO; and trace elements including Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, Cr and Ni.
